Hidden Harm: Impact on Children of Parental Mental Illness/Substance Misuse

(This course replaces Level 2 – Adult Mental Health and Safeguarding Children and Parental Substance Misuse: The Impact on Children)

It is a requirement that staff undertaking this course will have completed AWARENESS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT or Refresher within last 3 years. It is recommended that staff complete Adult Mental Health & Substance Misuse Awareness training before attending this course.

Aim

To raise awareness of the hidden impact on children and young people of substance misuse or mental illness within the family 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:
  • understand the impact of the hidden harm caused by parental mental illness and/or substance misuse on children and young people
  • have an understanding of risk and resilience issues where there is mental illness and/or substance misuse in the family
      • have explored how substance misuse and/or mental illness affects parenting capacity
      • be able to utilise the ERSCP Hidden Harm Tool Kit in order to  identify and meet the needs of children and young people where there is mental illness and/or substance misuse in the family
  • understand the links between hidden harm, and neglect and domestic abuse.
