Hidden Sentence: understanding the support needs of prisoners’ families

It is a requirement that staff undertaking this course will have completed AWARENESS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT, SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN IN EDUCATION or Refresher within last 3 years.

This inter-agency training, developed by Action for Prisoners’ Families, is aimed at all professionals  whose work may bring them into contact with prisoners’ families including prison staff, probation, children’s centres, education, health, youth services and social care.


The course aims to:

  • Explore and evaluate the impact of imprisonment on family members and society
  • Identify the needs of the family and how these can be met by statutory and voluntary provision and resources.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day participants will have had the opportunity to:

  • explore the impact of imprisonment on prisoners’ families
  • explore the current prison system
  • discuss the support needs of prisoner’s families
  • evaluate the use and importance of knowledge about the needs and wishes of prisoners’ families
  • discuss how to improve the coordination of services to provide more effective support for those affected by the imprisonment of a family member
  • reflect on how to improve your own practice in supporting prisoners’ families.
