Children and Young People who Misuse Substances

It is a requirement that staff undertaking this course will have completed AWARENESS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT or Refresher within last 3 years, and SUBSTANCE MISUSE AWARENESS

Aim

To understand how children and young people use substances and to develop screening skills of staff working with young people, who may be at risk from misusing substances

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Have explored the reasons why some children and young people misuse substances
  • Understand roles and responsibilities in identifying and supporting young people who may be misusing substances
  • Be able to use the DUST substance use screening tool
  • Know what services are available for young people who are misusing substances and how to refer young people to them
  • Understand issues around confidentiality and information sharing
