Impact on Children of Parental Mental Illness/Substance Misuse

ONE DAY COURSE

Commencing at 9.30am to 4.30pm

 (This course replaces Level 2 – Adult Mental Health and Safeguarding Children and Parental Substance Misuse: The Impact on Children)

It is a requirement that staff undertaking this course will have completed AWARENESS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT or Refresher within last 3 years , MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS and SUBSTANCE MISUSE AWARENESS

Aim

To raise awareness of the hidden impact on children and young people of substance misuse or mental illness within the family

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand what life is like for children living with parental mental illness and/or substance misuse
  • Have an understanding of children’s risk and resilience issues where there is mental illness and/or substance misuse in the family
  • Have explored how  substance misuse and/or mental illness affects parenting capacity
  • Understand their own and other agencies’ roles in identifying and meeting the needs of children and young people where there is mental illness and/or substance misuse in the family
